Happy Father’s Day–What Memories Do We Recall Of Our Fathers?

As time draws nearer to Father’s Day, I’m sure there are many of us who spend the special time thinking more about our fathers, surrogate fathers, or our husbands as fathers. While the role of fathers never seems to quite get the attention the role of mothers do, it’s importance is just as pivotal in our lives.

There are fathers and stepfathers, indulgent fathers and strict fathers. Back in the fifties and early sixties, fathers represented the security of having someone feed you, clothe you, and keep a roof over your head–no small matter in those days. The responsibilities of fathers have diversified since the roles of women have changed so dramatically. Fathers in the seventies and eighties were far more supportive and nurturing than those fathers of the past, and more recent fathers are even more involved in their children’s lives.

One thing I know for certain is that Father’s Day is a special day to say thank you to those men who took on the job of raising a family. Being a father has never been easy, and as our lives become more complicated and more dangerous in this twenty-first century, this is a good time to appreciate all the fathers out there.

Now’s the time to consider how your father influenced your life. Many are lucky enough to still have their fathers with them, so it’s great if you have that opportunity to reach out. I know for myself, while my father wasn’t perfect, I still miss him and memories of him can still make me smile. I know he did the best he could and I thank him for his love and caring. I would love to say ‘Happy Father’s Day’ to him once again, if only I could.

I’d also like to say happy Father’s Day to my husband, father of two wonderful women who are lucky enough to have married two men who have made great fathers. If you are not a father, I would still wish you a happy Father’s Day because I’m sure you have special memories of your own father that have carried you through the years, and I’d love to hear about them.

Thank you so much for stopping by.
